What is Human-Centered Design?

Human-Centered Design (HCD) is a structured yet flexible approach to problem solving that focuses on building empathy, sparking out-of-the-box thinking, and designing more innovative and impactful solutions. HCD methods are visual, participatory, egalitarian, and engaging.

Pitt CTSI's HCD certification training is led by CTSI staff who have been certified through the LUMA Institute to teach human-centered design.

What is the value of this training?

Researchers who have completed HCD training have found it highly beneficial, and report using HCD to refine and co-design interventions, uncover and address barriers to implementation, write innovative grants and manuscripts, and collect critical input from team members.

What is involved in HCD training?

Foundations Certification:

NOTE: Our May 2025 training has reached capacity. However, we encourage you to select the option to join our waitlist below. We do our best to contact individuals on our waitlist at least 3 months before each training. We expect our next training to be offered in Fall 2025.

Foundations training includes four hands-on, interactive learning sessions, providing an opportunity for attendees to learn and practice HCD in both in-person and virtual settings.

The next series of Foundations training Learning Sessions is scheduled for:

  •        Weds., May 7, 2025 - in-person, 9am-5pm
  •        Weds., May 14, 2025 - in-person, 10am-3pm
  •        Weds., May 21, 2025 - virtual over Zoom, 10am-3pm
  •        Weds., May 28, 2025 - in-person, 10am-3pm

There will be a break from 12pm-1pm each day of the training for lunch. Attendees are expected to attend all days for the entirety of the sessions. We cannot guarantee certification if you miss any part of the sessions.

During the virtual May 21 session, we will use a digital whiteboarding tool for hands-on practice with HCD methods in virtual settings. Prior use of digital whiteboards are not required, but having an openness and comfort with learning new digital tools is encouraged for this training. Attendees must join from a laptop or desktop computer on May 21 to ensure active participation.

Facilitator Certification (optional):

This training program offers an optional Facilitator certification after the Foundations Learning Sessions. The Facilitator certification program involves:

  1. Participation in 2 small group sessions
    • Sessions will be scheduled during June and July, based on the availability of the small group members
    • Sessions will be 2-hours, virtual or in-person, depending on small group preference
  2. Participation in a 2-hour in-person "showcase" session on August 7th, 2025

The Facilitator certification is OPTIONAL, but strongly encouraged for those who want to practice the content from the Learning Sessions with instructor and peer feedback.

Those who complete both the Foundations Learning Sessions and the Facilitator small group sessions will receive both a Foundations completion certificate and a Facilitator completion certificate.

Who is eligible?

Any faculty or staff member of a research team at Pitt can apply to participate in HCD training. Preference will be given to people who:

  1. Are involved in health research
  2. Can articulate a compelling need/desire to develop HCD competencies

This training is appropriate for those who are interested in learning about the process of HCD in health research and getting hands-on experience trying a variety of different HCD methods for different phases of a design process. This training is particularly appropriate for those who are writing a grant using HCD for health research, just starting a new project, or coordinating a community collaborative undertaking a design process.

What commitment is required?

HCD training constitutes a significant investment on the part of the CTSI to be able to provide this certification free-of-charge for faculty and staff. It is also highly sought after, thus seats fill up quickly.

If you are selected and agree to participate, we expect you to commit to attending the Foundations Learning Sessions in their entirety.

We also encourage you to join our HCD Community in Teams to learn more about HCD opportunities, share resources, discuss strategies, get advice, and find collaborators!
